An Invitation to Look Back So You Can Lead Forward (Try This Assessment)

Category: Blog

According to Deloitte’s 2024 Global Human Capital Trends report, emotional intelligence and self-awareness are among the top five leadership capabilities identified for navigating complexity and building resilient teams.

Some of the most important clues we have about our natural leadership tendencies are found in our earliest experiences on a team—our family team.

I wrote about how your childhood informs your leadership style to help you see how your role at the family dinner table still shows up in your conference room or your Zoom room today. These patterns don’t disappear; they adapt. Some of them make you an extraordinary leader. Some of them trip you up when the pressure is on.

That’s why I created the assessment below. It’s a quick way to notice which role—or roles—you may be leading from when stress turns up the heat. The point isn’t to box yourself in, but to shine a light on your default settings so you can choose differently if your settings aren’t serving you.

And here’s a preview: Every one of these archetypes has a “shadow factor.” I’ll explore those factors and how they can derail even the best intentions, in next month’s Stoop. Until then, take the assessment with curiosity. See what resonates. And bring your adult self to the table.
